The department provides graduate programs culminating in a Master of Science in Mathematics, Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics, Master of Science in Applied Mathematics, and Master of Science in Mathematics Education. With 70 full-time professors and 20 postdoctoral scholars, the department primarily operates from Altgeld Hall—a stunning Romanesque stone building at the center of the Illinois campus—which houses one of the globe's finest mathematics libraries. Approximately 150 Ph.D. candidates thrive in a cooperative environment, benefiting from around twenty-five weekly research seminars and lectures. Typically, doctoral candidates complete their Ph.D. requirements within four to six years. This involves passing comprehensive exams (assessing foundational graduate-level knowledge in algebra, analysis, and related fields) and preliminary exams (evaluating research readiness in a chosen specialization). Additionally, students must develop, present, and defend an original mathematical thesis. Prospective applicants should have a solid undergraduate mathematics foundation.
