The Doctor of Philosophy in Art Education program prepares scholars to advance knowledge in the field of Art Education. At the University of Illinois, professors and doctoral candidates form a dynamic research community within a top-tier research university. This collaborative environment, featuring faculty with diverse expertise in areas like modern art and visual culture pedagogy, formal and informal education settings, cultural policy and urban development, as well as educator preparation and professional identity, offers graduate students a rich intellectual space to expand their thinking and establish themselves as leading experts in their chosen dissertation focus. Doctoral candidates are guaranteed four years of financial support through teaching assistantships, contingent on maintaining satisfactory academic progress, which covers tuition, provides a stipend, includes health benefits, offers conference travel funds, and presents numerous chances to secure competitive research grants. The curriculum requires five art education courses, research methods and academic writing classes, electives in a supporting minor field tailored to individual interests, and preparatory courses for the qualifying exam (after one year) and preliminary exam (upon completing coursework). Potential minor concentrations include Asian Studies, Art History, Digital Media, Museum Education, and Gender Studies. After finishing coursework, candidates develop an original dissertation that expands the boundaries of art education scholarship, culminating in a formal dissertation defense.
