Aspiring educators enrolled in teacher certification programs through the College of Education (COE) must fulfill criteria across multiple sequential checkpoints. These gateway requirements involve completing designated courses, maintaining minimum GPA standards, fulfilling clinical experience obligations, and passing licensure-specific examinations. Satisfying all Gateway criteria results in both degree conferral and licensure attainment. Secondary Education candidates begin their program as first-year students. To qualify for licensure recommendation, students must sustain a minimum 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) across University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign cumulative, subject area, and professional education coursework. Courses graded C- or below cannot be applied toward Illinois state certification, additional endorsements, or teaching approvals. Program participants should review with their academic advisor or the Council on Teacher Education for the specific courses included in GPA calculations.
