Civil and environmental engineers utilize fundamental scientific concepts, enhanced by mathematical and computational methods, to tackle society's most pressing issues: guaranteeing clean air, safe water supplies, and proper sanitation; adapting to environmental shifts; safeguarding communities from both natural and artificial threats; creating inclusive, sustainable infrastructure; revolutionizing transportation systems for an automated era; and designing record-breaking skyscrapers and landmark bridges. The civil engineering curriculum encompasses seven specialized fields (construction engineering and management, building materials, environmental engineering and science, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering and science, structural engineering, and transportation engineering) along with three interdisciplinary initiatives (sustainable and resilient infrastructure systems, energy-water-environment sustainability, and societal risk and hazard reduction). While each specialization possesses unique expertise and technical approaches, civil and environmental engineering endeavors frequently integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines to effectively solve complex societal problems.
