The BFA dance curriculum is a rigorous program designed for committed students, providing comprehensive training in technique, composition, and performance. Coursework encompasses production, improvisation, music theory, dance literature, pedagogy, history, movement science, and repertoire. Students can choose electives in ballet, modern dance, tap, jazz, improvisation, contact improvisation, international dance styles, yoga, Alexander Technique, partnering, Laban movement analysis, Labanotation, dance film, composer-choreographer collaboration, digital dance tools, and independent projects. The program mandates daily core technique classes with three modern and two ballet sessions weekly throughout each semester, plus optional technique classes for at least one extra credit hour per term. Students must complete at least two courses in supplementary dance styles (jazz, tap, world dance, etc.). To graduate, majors must reach advanced modern technique and intermediate ballet proficiency for two semesters minimum. The improvisation/composition track requires 11+ studio hours culminating in a senior choreography showcase. Performance/repertory coursework demands 6+ credit hours. The program offers up to 20 professional elective credits in dance or related arts/sciences. Demonstrate physically demanding dance with technical proficiency, artistic expression, and musical interpretation. Apply anatomical and somatic principles in both theory and practice. Develop creative processes, explore choreographic investigations, and present polished dance works for performance. Grasp fundamental technologies and their uses in choreography, instruction, research, and promotion.
