The department offers undergraduate students comprehensive education in German and Scandinavian languages, covering all linguistic aspects and providing deep cultural insights. With diverse course options, learners can examine the historical development and grammatical structures of these languages, as well as their rich applications in literature, cultural contexts, and commercial settings. Students develop appreciation for German and Scandinavian heritage while honing their critical thinking and analytical abilities in both these languages and English. The renowned Illinois in Vienna study-abroad program complements departmental coursework perfectly, offering an immersive international experience. To maintain satisfactory academic progress and qualify for certification, students must uphold a minimum 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) across UIUC requirements, cumulative coursework, content areas, and professional education classes. Students are encouraged to check with their advisor or the Council on Teacher Education for specific course listings affecting GPA calculations.
