The Linguistics Department provides undergraduate programs in Linguistics, English as an International Language, English as a Second Language, and several less commonly taught languages. Linguistics classes explore both practical and theoretical aspects of language structure, usage, and historical development. These courses appeal not just to linguistics students but also to those in fields where language analysis plays a key role, such as anthropology, speech pathology, psychology, philosophy, computer science, and foreign language studies. The linguistics program offers comprehensive training in fundamental theoretical linguistics while requiring proficiency in multiple foreign languages, including at least one non-Western language. Students enjoy flexibility in choosing advanced coursework, allowing them to specialize in specific linguistics subfields when planning their degree path.
