The Master's in Public Affairs Reporting equips students to focus on government and policy journalism. This program prepares graduates to excel as professional journalists, capable of analyzing and presenting government operations and policy decisions to the public with precision and timeliness. The curriculum cultivates reporters who grasp complex public issues and convey them with the accuracy, clarity, and speed expected of top-tier journalists.
This intensive 10-month master's program develops journalists skilled at creating insightful coverage that makes government, politics, and public affairs accessible to audiences.
The training focuses on three key areas: core journalism skills (reporting and writing across digital, broadcast, and print platforms), public policy expertise, and professional ethics. A highlight is the six-month paid internship, where students join Statehouse news teams to cover the Illinois General Assembly's spring session and other state government activities.
