To obtain licensure as a school counselor in Illinois, graduate students must complete the ISBE-approved HDC master's program in school counseling and earn the department's endorsement. They are also required to achieve passing scores on both the Test of Academic Proficiency (or its equivalent) and the School Counselor Content Test (Test #181) in accordance with departmental requirements.
The School Counseling specialization in the HDC program requires four extra courses (12 credit hours) in addition to the 49-credit core curriculum, bringing the total required credits to 61.
