The University of Illinois Springfield's School of Education provides multiple degree pathways for obtaining an Illinois Secondary (9-12) Professional Educator License (PEL). Available programs consist of:
Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with English concentration
Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with Mathematics concentration
Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with History concentration
Students pursuing the BA in Secondary Education English can typically finish their complete curriculum (encompassing general education, teacher preparation, subject matter, and ECCE requirements) within four years. Those combining a content area major with a Secondary Education minor may need to exceed the standard 120 credit hours to fulfill all requirements. Individuals interested in expanding their teaching qualifications (such as adding another subject area, LBS1 certification, or Middle Grades endorsement) should consult with their School of Education advisor for specific guidance.
The Secondary English Education curriculum is organized into six components: general education requirements, introductory classes, core subjects, teaching methodology courses, content-specific classes, and student teaching experience.
