Available through the nationally recognized Lionel Hampton School of Music, this program attracts students aspiring to careers as professional musicians, composers, or educators. The comprehensive liberal arts curriculum also equips graduates for opportunities in business, legal, medical, and various other professional fields. Music majors develop their artistry through hands-on performance, composition, musical analysis, and active listening. Through rigorous training, students hone their musical abilities while establishing a solid grounding in humanities and social sciences, with coursework covering music theory, history, and practical performance. Admission to the program requires a successful audition.
Degree candidates work toward achieving exceptional proficiency in their chosen musical specialty, which may include keyboard, brass, percussion, woodwinds, strings (including classical guitar), or vocal performance. Prospective students must audition on their primary instrument or voice for acceptance into the Performance degree track. The program mandates two recitals: a 30-minute performance during junior year and a 60-minute recital in the senior year. Many alumni continue their education at the graduate level, either at the University of Idaho or other institutions.
