The Music Division aims to foster a deep appreciation for musical artistry through top-tier educational programs. Serving the wider University population, it provides General Education music classes, ensemble performance opportunities, private instruction, and introductory courses in piano, voice, and guitar, along with Music minors. The Bachelor of Music program equips students for professional music careers, ensuring graduates can: 1) proficiently read sheet music and identify performance inaccuracies, 2) critically assess fundamental components in musical compositions and renditions, 3) deliver technically sound performances adhering to stylistic conventions. Admission and graduation standards follow guidelines set by the National Association of Schools of Music and Tennessee's teacher certification requirements. Undergraduate students can pursue two degree options: a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music or a more specialized Bachelor of Music (B.M.) with five focus areas: instrumental performance, vocal performance, composition, instrumental music education, and vocal music education. The B.M. curriculum dedicates about 66% of its four-year program to music studies. Designed for future educators, the B.M. in music education merges core academics with musical training and pedagogical strategies in a rigorous sequence, culminating in teaching certification. All music degrees provide solid foundations for advanced graduate studies.
