The field of physics has given rise to numerous groundbreaking innovations that shape our modern world, including computing systems, the internet, laser devices, and medical imaging technologies. Yet the fundamental principles governing our physical reality remain only partially understood.
This academic program explores the properties and interactions of matter and energy, emphasizing core areas like classical dynamics, electromagnetic theory, contemporary physics, quantum phenomena, and thermodynamics. Students develop skills to tackle challenging scientific problems across diverse fields including healthcare, engineering, power generation, and beyond.
Physics students acquire practical laboratory experience by creating and performing experiments with cutting-edge research methods and digital tools. Unique investigative opportunities are available through the department's NSF-funded undergraduate research initiative (REU program).
