The Face to Face MSW program equips students for careers in clinical or macro social work. Classes are mainly held in person at the University of Houston's main campus, offering two specialized practice areas, four concentration options, and four dual degree opportunities. This full-time program primarily operates during daytime hours and isn't available as an evening-only option. Both Advanced Standing and traditional program paths are offered in the Face to Face format.
Clinical Practice involves utilizing theories, techniques, skills, and ethical principles to improve the psychological, emotional, behavioral, and social functioning of individuals, families, groups, and communities. This practice emphasizes leadership in advancing social justice while employing culturally sensitive, context-aware approaches that build on strengths. It encompasses understanding biopsychosocial factors and implementing evidence-based methods, including (but not limited to) assessment, treatment, prevention, advocacy, therapy, supervision, and consultation.
Macro Practice trains students to address urban challenges by developing leadership skills to serve diverse, at-risk populations. Graduates learn to drive social change through community organizations, public agencies, and private institutions, empowering individuals and strengthening communities. The curriculum builds essential competencies for work at community, organizational, societal, and international levels, preparing students for leadership roles as advocates, administrators, policy developers, researchers, and community organizers.
