The Master of Science in Architecture with a specialization in sustainable design [MS ARCH in Sustainable Design] is an advanced post-professional program for students concentrating on sustainable design research and implementation across various scales, from energy-efficient structures to improved urban planning and intelligent development.
Prior to the widespread adoption of air-conditioning, climate-responsive architecture wasn't just desirable but essential. Passive design strategies—harnessing solar cycles and optimizing natural airflow—were common practice long before the term existed. Since the World Commission on Environment and Development characterized sustainability as fulfilling current requirements without jeopardizing future generations' capacity to meet theirs, we've gained deeper insight into how technological advancements can simultaneously create challenges and remedies. Leveraging our position in Houston, the global energy hub, this program maintains close ties with the UH Energy research initiative, fostering academic-industry partnerships on interdisciplinary projects aimed at enhancing our constructed surroundings.
