The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences operates within a state-of-the-art agricultural research complex. The facility features an eleven-story climate-controlled research tower with adjacent wings housing fully equipped laboratories, classrooms, offices, and support areas. On-site resources include growth chambers, greenhouses, and three primary field stations located near Ithaca. Several faculty members hold positions at the Robert W. Holley Center for Agriculture and Health or the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, both campus-based institutions. Numerous professors conduct research addressing global agricultural and environmental challenges in tropical and subtropical areas, with select students having opportunities to complete significant portions of their research abroad. Field Crop Science encompasses diverse studies ranging from practical field applications to cellular biology and biotechnological advancements. Research aims to enhance crop yield and quality worldwide while identifying physiological traits suitable for enhancement through breeding or genetic modification. Soil Science examines soil properties and ecological processes, focusing on optimizing soil conditions for agriculture while maintaining environmental sustainability through ecological methods.
Research also explores advanced management techniques that holistically address crop and soil interactions. Investigations include sustainable farming systems that maintain or improve soil quality, along with assessments of economic, social, and environmental effects of different crops and agricultural systems.
