The History Department provides Master of Arts programs covering various specializations including U.S., European, Latin American, Ancient, Modern Arab/Middle Eastern, Transnational, and Public History across all time periods. Additionally, students can take courses in African, Asian, Modern Arab/Middle Eastern, and World history. The department grants M.A. degrees in U.S., European/Ancient, Latin American, Modern Arab/Middle Eastern, Global, and public history throughout different eras. Course offerings also include studies in African, Asian, and Global South histories.

Qualification Requirements

All graduate students are required to provide proof of the attainment of a Bachelor's degree before enrolling at the University of Houston. Credential Evaluations are completed in house at the Graduate School, and outside evaluations will not be accepted.
Overall 3.3 (B+) average on the last sixty (60) hours of course credit.
A minimum of 18 hours in history or other relevant courses with a 3.3 (B+) average. The type of courses accepted will be at the discretion of the History Department. NOTE: Only twelve hours of course work taken as a Post Baccalaureate (PB) student may be counted toward the M.A. degree.

The minimum TOEFL score required is 79 for the internet-based test.
The minimum TOEFL score for the paper-based (pBT) exam is 550 or higher.
The minimum TOEFL score for the new revised paper-based exam is: Reading 20, Listening 20, and Writing 20.
The minimum IELTS score required is an overall score of a 6.5.
