Welcome to the University of Washington's History Graduate Program. We specialize in educating future historians who contribute to academic knowledge while also teaching and connecting with wider audiences. Currently, over 50 students are enrolled in our MA and PhD programs across diverse historical fields, benefiting from our faculty's extensive expertise. Our approach emphasizes interdisciplinary and comparative historical methods, allowing students to collaborate with faculty both within our department and across other UW programs. Faculty and graduate students actively participate in digital history initiatives that enhance research, education, and public engagement with historical scholarship.
The University of Washington provides specialized graduate studies in pre-modern Asian history, covering East, South, and Southeast Asia. Our Chinese history program excels in social history and women's studies of the early imperial era, along with the cultural and political history of later imperial periods. The South Asia program concentrates on religious developments during the Mughal and post-Mughal eras. Southeast Asian History specialties include Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, with an emphasis on linguistic politics. Additionally, we offer coursework in pre-modern Sino-Vietnamese historical studies.
