The University of Houston's Department of Hispanic Studies stands as the nation's sole provider of a Ph.D. program in Spanish that specifically focuses on U.S. Latino literature, language, and culture. Hispanic communities have inhabited what is now U.S. territory since before the establishment of British colonies and the American nation. Across generations, a distinct Latino culture emerged, continually enhanced by immigrants and refugees from Spanish-speaking nations, forming what is currently the country's biggest minority group. Recognizing the educational demands of this growing demographic—projected to reach one-third of the U.S. population—the department established this specialized concentration. The program equips students with both content knowledge and research methods to teach, study, and safeguard U.S. Latino linguistic traditions, literary works, and cultural practices. Students gain extensive research experience, with opportunities to present at academic conferences and publish their scholarly discoveries.
