The University of Houston's Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology graduate program stands among the nation's most established, expansive, and prestigious programs.
For over seven decades since its founding in 1950, the UH I/O program has focused on implementing psychological research and theory to enhance both scientific understanding and practical applications in the field. The curriculum prepares students as scientist-practitioners, equipping them to apply cutting-edge theories and methodologies to address workplace challenges while simultaneously informing academic theory and professional standards. Notably, in 2018, UH earned 9th place rankings for both research excellence and applied training opportunities among I/O programs nationwide (Howald, Nesnidol, Horan, & Matthews, 2018).
Supporting the university's Tier One objectives, the program generates groundbreaking research published in leading journals, serves the local community through knowledge sharing and HR consulting for both private and public organizations, and consistently graduates doctoral candidates. Aligned with UH's focus on energy and health, the program maintains robust collaborations with industry leaders in these sectors, conducting significant research—particularly on workplace safety and stress management—that directly impacts professional practice. Our organizational network includes past and present partners such as the City of Houston, ExxonMobil, Men's Wearhouse, Willbros, Houston Transtar, and Aramco.
