Biological Oceanography faculty and researchers conduct studies in varied environments worldwide, from inland waterways and coastal regions to the open ocean. Their work extends from the ocean's surface to the seafloor depths, pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery to unravel the sea's most compelling questions.
Our faculty members serve as educators and research advisors, guiding students in Oceanography, Marine Biology graduate programs, and the Global Environmental Science undergraduate program. Through our extensive funded initiatives, we offer exciting research prospects for students passionate about marine biology and biological oceanography.
Recognizing science's vital role in safeguarding our planet, our programs balance fundamental research with real-world applications addressing pressing societal issues. We focus on critical subjects including greenhouse gas dynamics, ecological consequences of ozone depletion and deep-sea extraction, pollutant movement and recycling processes, fishery population dynamics, coastal ecosystem health, and microbial pathogen ecology. These interdisciplinary challenges promote active collaboration among biologists, geochemists, and physicists within our department and across institutions.
