The Music Department provides two piano performance degree options: a Bachelor of Music (BM) and Master of Music (MM) in Piano Performance.

Our BM and MM programs in Piano Performance deliver rigorous training for aspiring concert pianists, chamber musicians, and accompanists, while also preparing students for teaching positions in higher education and private studios. Both programs culminate in a full-length memorized public recital.

The Bachelor of Arts program offers a more flexible liberal arts education that students can tailor to their personal goals. This degree concludes with a shorter memorized public recital.

Our distinguished Piano Faculty includes Dr. Jonathan Korth, Dr. Thomas Yee, Bichuan Li, Rosy Wang, and Wendy Yamashita. We are committed to helping students reach exceptional artistic and professional levels.

UHM provides numerous performance opportunities. Weekly Piano Studio Classes allow majors to perform for peers in Orvis Auditorium, fostering growth through constructive feedback. Public Piano Repertory Labs occur four times each semester during lunch hours. Students may also compete in our annual Concerto Competition for a chance to perform with the UH Symphony Orchestra. Ensemble options range from Chamber Music to Jazz Ensemble, with the Music Department being particularly renowned for its diverse ethnic ensembles.

Students enjoy access to our newly upgraded practice facilities featuring climate-controlled rooms with top-tier Steinway and Petrov instruments.

Beyond campus, students can connect with Honolulu's thriving piano community through organizations like the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and various chamber music series. We encourage participation in professional associations such as HPTA, MTNA, and HMTA, which host events like the annual state convention and Pianomania.

Alongside piano studies, our department offers comprehensive training in music theory, composition, education, and various other musical disciplines.
