UHM's Directing program equips students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to create not just staged performances, but entire unforgettable worlds. Directors must master essential elements like depth, rhythm, emotional resonance, intellectual rigor, profound empathy, and human-centered storytelling. Successful directing careers, whether in academia or professional settings, rely heavily on collaborative skills. While maintaining a clear artistic vision, directors must also allow space for creative contributions from actors, designers, and viewers. The program strengthens directing abilities through intensive study of historical contexts, dramaturgical analysis, and cultural anthropology, fostering distinctive and impactful artistic voices. Students benefit from exposure to diverse theatrical traditions, including Hawaiian, Pacific, Asian, and Euro-American techniques. We aspire for our graduates to emerge as influential leaders and community catalysts, recognizing that artistic innovation and social consciousness are deeply interconnected.
