The University of Hawaii at Mnoa's Theatre and Performance Studies programs are celebrated for their productions and curriculum that highlight both traditional and modern Hawaiian and Asian performance arts. Students across all levels and programs can explore acting, directing, design, playwriting, and theater for young audiences (TYA), while courses in history, theory, research, and performance studies offer valuable context and inspire innovation. Learning is complemented by performances held in the 600-seat Kennedy Theatre and the cozy Earle Ernst Lab Theatre.
The Theatre and Performance Studies department boasts 14 full-time faculty members who instruct more than 40 courses each semester. With roughly 50 undergraduate majors, 38 master's candidates, and 15 PhD students, the program attracts aspiring theater professionals from around the world.
Through academic coursework and a full season of performances in the stunning Kennedy Theatre complex, students and audiences experience works from each specialized focus area. These degree programs offer a comprehensive educational foundation while allowing students to concentrate deeply on their chosen disciplines.
