The English Department excels in both classic and contemporary fields of literary and cultural studies, encompassing film, popular culture, creative writing, composition, rhetoric, and Asia/Pacific studies with a focus on Hawaii. Our faculty are dedicated to outstanding research, community engagement, and exceptional instruction, featuring honored educators and winners of notable state, national, and global research and writing accolades. Graduate students have earned prestigious fellowships from organizations like the Ford Foundation and the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.
Throughout the year, the department hosts events featuring visiting authors and scholars. Students can participate in journal editing, conference organization, undergraduate tutoring, mentorship, teaching, community internships, and other enriching activities.
The program allows students to focus on one of four specialized tracks while exploring additional areas, offering a comprehensive understanding of evolving English studies and each student's chosen discipline. Completing the M.A. in English requires 33 credit hours, with specific criteria for each concentration.
