The Master of Arts program in Germanics is designed to provide students with comprehensive exposure to German Studies, covering areas such as literary history, intellectual traditions, cultural analysis, and teaching methods. Those awarded teaching assistantships must meet both Graduate School and department-specific criteria. New teaching assistants must register for German 518/576 in the autumn quarter and attend the fall orientation program.
Applicants to the MA program in Germanics should have fulfilled requirements equivalent to those for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Germanics at the University of Washington. These requirements include advanced proficiency in the German language and knowledge of the modern periods of German literature and civilization.
English Proficiency:
The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher
TOEFL pBT - Minimum Required Score: 500
Duolingo: Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 105; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 120 or higher
IELTS: Minimum Required Score 6.5
