The English Department excels in both conventional and emerging fields of literary and cultural studies, encompassing film, popular culture, creative writing, composition, rhetoric, and Asia/Pacific studies with a focus on Hawaii. Dedicated faculty members prioritize impactful research, community engagement, and outstanding instruction. Among them are distinguished educators and winners of notable state, national, and global research and writing honors. Graduate students have earned prestigious fellowships, including those from the Ford Foundation and the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.
Throughout the year, the department organizes events featuring guest writers and scholars. Students can contribute to journals and conferences, tutor undergraduates, serve as mentors, teach courses, pursue community internships, and explore various other opportunities.
The program allows students to focus on one of four specialized tracks while also engaging with complementary disciplines. This structure ensures a comprehensive understanding of evolving English studies and each student's chosen focus within the field. Completing the M.A. in English requires 33 credit hours, with specific criteria for each concentration.
