The Master of Arts in Art History cultivates expertise in art historical scholarship, particularly focusing on Asia/Pacific regions, while exploring theoretical frameworks and critical methodologies in Art History and visual culture studies. The program provides specialized tracks in: (1) Chinese art, (2) Japanese art, (3) Pacific art, (4) South/Southeast Asian art, and (5) Modern/Contemporary art. This full-time degree requires 36 credits, typically completed over three years (six consecutive semesters).
This MA program emphasizes independent scholarly investigation in Art History, serving as foundational preparation for doctoral studies and academic careers such as university teaching or museum curation. Students must complete 6 credits of ART 700 (Thesis Research) and produce an original research Thesis, which may take the form of a traditional written thesis, curatorial project, exhibition proposal, or other approved format. Those planning to pursue PhD studies are advised to undertake coursework beyond the basic MA requirements.
