The PhD in Music provides specializations in four fields: composition, ethnomusicology, music education, and musicology. Candidates collaborate with faculty mentors to tailor their curriculum within their chosen discipline and complementary subjects, address any foundational gaps, and ready themselves for comprehensive examinations and dissertation work.
Focused on examinations rather than coursework, the Ph.D. in Music demands a flexible credit load based on the selected specialization and each student's academic background. Typically, students complete courses mandated by their concentration along with those recommended by their advisory committee. Additional coursework to enhance advanced academic writing proficiency may be necessary. Doctoral studies must at minimum fulfill the program's residency criteria. (refer to Program Residency Requirements section below)
All PhD candidates must complete no less than half of their graduate coursework at the 600-level or above.
Students without prior graduate-level coursework in bibliography or library research methods will need to enroll in Mus 661 to fulfill this prerequisite at UHM.
