The doctoral program offers extensive professional development for research and academic careers. Ph.D. candidates must complete at least 33 credit hours of coursework and seminars at the University of Hawaii (excluding LING 800) beyond their MA requirements (or, for those without an MA, beyond the foundational courses LING 410, 420, 421, 422, and 645). Mandatory courses cover phonology (LING 621), grammar (LING 622), and research methodologies. Required methodology courses are: LING 630 (field research), LING 632 (lab techniques), LING 750F (phonetic documentation of endangered languages), and LING 750Q (language acquisition methods). Those pursuing experimental research should consider statistics courses (such as EDEP 429, ESL 490 or 671). Doctoral candidates must show proficiency in a non-native language and produce two publishable-quality papers. Additionally, they must successfully complete comprehensive exams, defend their dissertation proposal, and undergo a final oral defense of their dissertation.
