Earning a PhD in astronomy typically follows one of two routes. (1) Those beginning with a STEM Bachelor's or Master's degree complete coursework and research projects in their initial two years. (2) Candidates holding a Master's in astronomy or equivalent qualification might bypass many first-year requirements. Both approaches meet at an oral evaluation to review students' research comprehension and field expertise. Following this, all candidates must propose a dissertation topic during their Comprehensive Examination, carry out their research, write their doctoral thesis, and defend it at a Final Examination.
