The Department of Physics and Astronomy provides graduate programs for both master's and PhD degrees. Home to around 80 graduate students and 27 faculty members, the department fosters a welcoming, collaborative environment that encourages strong faculty-student relationships. Faculty members secure over $16 million annually in research funding, enabling student research assistantships, conference travel opportunities, and use of advanced research tools like high-performance computing systems and fully equipped technical workshops. A prime example of our advanced facilities is the Extreme Light Laboratory, featuring a multimillion-dollar laser system that achieves unprecedented light intensity levels. This groundbreaking technology not only promises breakthroughs in fundamental physics but also has significant cross-disciplinary applications spanning materials science, chemistry, biology, medicine, security, and defense.
