UHM's Directing program equips students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to create memorable theatrical worlds. Directors must master elements like depth, rhythm, emotional resonance, and intellectual rigor while maintaining openness to collaboration. At the heart of this art form lies the human experience, which directors must skillfully orchestrate through teamwork with actors, designers, and audiences. The curriculum strengthens directing abilities through intensive study of historical contexts, dramaturgical analysis, and cultural anthropology, fostering distinctive artistic voices. Students explore diverse performance traditions from Hawaiian, Pacific, Asian, and Euro-American cultures. We aspire to cultivate not just skilled directors but visionary leaders who blend creative entrepreneurship with meaningful community engagement.
