The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program specializing in music education draws exceptional students passionate about research in music instruction, the psychology of musical learning, and early childhood music development. This degree equips scholars with scientific research methodologies to explore and uncover new insights about human musical behaviors. Participants will master both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, applying these techniques to enhance music education practices. Successful research in this field requires knowledge of psychology, research methodology, statistical analysis, and computational applications. Graduates will possess the skills to develop meaningful research initiatives that expand the field's collective knowledge.

Typically requiring three years of full-time study beyond a master's degree (excluding dissertation work), all doctoral requirements must be fulfilled within an eight-year timeframe. Students take 18-27 credit hours before undergoing an oral preliminary examination. The written comprehensive exam must be passed within five years of starting the program, enabling candidates to formulate their research proposal and commence dissertation work. An initial written and oral preliminary examination occurs after completing 12-15 credit hours. The Ph.D. demands focused, uninterrupted study - students must complete at least two consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment during regular academic terms to ensure proper immersion in the program.
