The Ph.D. in Music Education provides advanced training in music pedagogy through a research-focused lens. Designed for professionals pursuing deeper expertise in music education or academic/administrative careers, this program combines coursework, practical internships, and specialized training for leadership positions. The curriculum explores diverse musical disciplines, pedagogical theories, instructional methods, and assessment strategies alongside comprehensive research training. While credit requirements (minimum 47) adjust based on prior qualifications, all candidates must complete a significant research thesis (additional to credit minimums) and maintain at least one year of full-time residency. Summer courses may fulfill partial requirements, and students must prove proficiency in Western art music history and theory through exams or supplementary coursework.
The School of Music requires the completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree in music or music education, with a junior/senior grade-point average of 2.80 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
