The Hartt School's Instrumental Conducting program offers a distinctive approach to equipping aspiring conductors for the wide array of professional opportunities ahead. Alongside regular private instruction, score study, and seminars, participants can engage in supplementary training with our vocal department.
Typically hosting two master's and two doctoral candidates, the program provides hands-on experience directing various ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Contemporary Ensemble, and optionally Music Theatre and Opera. Hartt enables exceptional graduate students to undertake specialized training in our distinctive conducting programs, tailored for those showing promise in professional conducting careers across academic and performance settings.
Beyond focused work in their primary discipline (orchestral, wind band, or choral), all students gain cross-disciplinary conducting experience. We take pride in Hartt's innovative approach, addressing the modern conductor's need for diverse training.
Our Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) program cultivates comprehensive musicianship, blending exceptional performance skills with academic rigor. Designed for advanced musical careers, the curriculum typically requires two years beyond a master's degree, with a minimum one-year residency (9 credits per semester). Students may begin with a summer session, but must complete all requirements within seven years of enrollment. The DMA combines a primary concentration with an elective minor.
Prospective students must demonstrate outstanding academic potential, substantial musical training, and hold an accredited master's degree (or international equivalent). Advanced technical and artistic proficiency is required for admission.
