The Chemistry Department's primary objective is to prepare aspiring chemists for careers in industry, government, or academia through comprehensive education and training. Graduate candidates engage in research-focused studies to earn either Ph.D. or M.S. degrees, with most opting to pursue a Ph.D. directly rather than obtaining a master's degree. Students can focus their studies on analytical, inorganic (including bioinorganic), organic, or physical chemistry, while also having opportunities to explore various interdisciplinary research fields, irrespective of their primary course concentration.
The graduate chemistry program aims to develop students into ethical researchers and scientifically knowledgeable professionals by immersing them in all facets of chemistry and the worldwide chemical industry. Both Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees are available, with the majority of graduate work centered on specialized dissertation research across diverse chemistry disciplines and related scientific fields. Additional information regarding research opportunities is available on our website: Dissertation and Final Defense.
