The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Special Education provides initial certification for individuals with bachelor's degrees in unrelated fields who aren't currently certified teachers. Candidates must build both foundational and advanced competencies before receiving certification. The curriculum combines required coursework with hands-on practicum experiences, and all graduate students complete applied research as part of their degree requirements.
The general curriculum track focuses on educating students with mild disabilities who primarily follow standard academic programs. This specialization equips educators to work in collaborative, inclusive, or resource-based settings. Typical students served through this track include those with behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, mild cognitive impairments, health-related challenges, and certain autism spectrum conditions.
The 36-credit minimum program features core courses alongside customized applied research tailored to each student's professional goals. This structure enables candidates to develop specialized expertise in diverse special education subjects applicable across all age groups.
