The University of Georgia's sociology graduate program primarily focuses on students pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy degree. While we provide a Master of Arts option, our curriculum isn't divided between M.A. and Ph.D. tracks. Students earn their M.A. as part of the Ph.D. journey. Every incoming student gains comprehensive foundational training in sociological theory, research methodologies, analytical techniques, and core subject areas. This prepares them for specialized advanced studies within one or more broad disciplinary fields.
With an advantageous faculty-to-student ratio, we prioritize personalized instruction and collaborative research between students and professors. We actively promote student involvement in research projects, encouraging them to present findings at academic conferences and publish their work. The Ph.D. program features a demanding curriculum, with first-year studies focusing on sociological fundamentals: mandatory courses in research design, theory, statistical analysis of sociological data, the Proseminar, and electives in key subject areas. These electives typically include foundational courses introducing theoretical and research literature for departmental specialties. All first-year students must complete the Proseminar sequence. By the second year, most students fulfill master's degree requirements while starting advanced seminars in their chosen specialization areas.
