The Department of Mathematics boasts one of the top-ranked graduate mathematics programs in the southeastern United States. As one of UGA's largest academic units, it provides four advanced degree options: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Arts Non-Thesis (MA), Master of Applied Mathematical Science (MAMS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Housed within UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the department operates from the Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center near the Science Library on south campus. Students can pursue specialized study and research across diverse mathematical disciplines including algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, various forms of differential equations, multiple geometry branches, mathematical physics, number theory, numerical analysis, probability theory, and topology. Qualified graduate students may receive financial assistance through teaching or research assistantships, renewable for up to six years (or five years for those entering with a Master's degree) contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
