The University of Georgia's Comparative Literature program stands among the most comprehensive offerings at public universities across the United States. Alongside foundational courses in the discipline, students can explore diverse Asian and African language studies.
UGA's Comparative Literature Department (CMLT) provides both Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs. These programs emphasize student initiative, with learners collaborating closely with their Major Professor and faculty advisors to design their curriculum and meet degree requirements. This involves taking CMLT courses alongside interdisciplinary offerings, conducting extensive supplementary reading, and completing independent research through thesis or dissertation work.
Our department ranks among the world's largest Comparative Literature programs, boasting seventeen full-time faculty members. Our curriculum spans European literary traditions from medieval to contemporary works, alongside specialized studies in Eastern/Central European, African, and various Asian literatures. The program also features consistent course offerings in literary theory and interdisciplinary approaches, including film studies, visual arts connections, musical intersections, and scientific perspectives in literature.
