The University of Georgia provides a graduate certificate in conservation ecology and sustainable development via its Institute of Ecology. This program equips students with cross-disciplinary training to address complex challenges in conservation and sustainability fields. Natural science students gain social science insights into development ecology, while social science students acquire ecological knowledge to base their decisions on biological realities.
To complete the graduate certificate, students must earn a minimum of 20 credit hours. The curriculum includes four required courses: ECOL 6080 (Principles of Conservation and Sustainable Development I, 4 credits), ECOL 6140 (Principles of Conservation and Sustainable Development II, 3 credits), a conservation and sustainability seminar elective (2-3 credits), and ECOL 8400 (Perspectives on Conservation Ecology and Sustainable Development, 1 credit, taken twice). Students complete the remaining credits (at least 10) through approved electives, which may count toward both the certificate and their graduate degree requirements. Each student collaborates with their departmental advisor to design a study plan meeting the certificate's academic standards.
