The Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (ILS) program serves as the entry point for 14 Ph.D. programs in Life Sciences, managing admissions and a Fall curriculum centered on intensive lab rotations and professional skill-building.
At the University of Georgia, the ILS Program provides doctoral candidates with the chance to investigate diverse life science research fields before committing to a specific department and research area. This distinguished UGA graduate program is renowned for fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration among both faculty and students.
ILS removes traditional academic boundaries, enabling students to thoroughly examine life science research possibilities. First-year ILS participants complete foundational coursework while rotating through three faculty laboratories across affiliated departments. Students must choose a faculty advisor/lab by the Fall semester's conclusion. Following this selection, ILS students transition into their advisor's home department graduate program, fulfilling all its doctoral requirements. Rather than granting degrees itself, ILS expands research horizons for students seeking to explore the full spectrum of life science investigations.
