The Department of Communication Studies (previously known as Speech Communication) provides MA and PhD degree programs. Students can specialize in either Interpersonal & Health or Rhetorical Studies. The graduate program aims to equip students with research methodologies for advancing understanding of human communication, develop expertise in sharing communication knowledge with diverse audiences, and promote a spirit of intellectual curiosity and community engagement. Typically, the standard PhD program takes four years to complete and requires applicants to hold a Master's degree.
The Rhetorical Studies graduate program focuses on training students to investigate how rhetorical practices influence public discourse. The curriculum introduces various qualitative research approaches and examines diverse perspectives on rhetorical analysis - encompassing spoken, written, visual, and mass media communication. The program specializes in contemporary rhetorical theory, public debate analysis, feminist criticism, and the rhetoric of scientific discourse.
