Cinema stands as one of the most recent art forms, with its evolution mirroring transformations in our modern and postmodern society. UGA's Film Studies program focuses on analyzing cinema through theoretical frameworks, critical perspectives, and historical examinations of its economic, cultural, and technological progression. This is not a production-focused degree; aspiring filmmakers should consider combining this major with Grady College's Telecommunications program.
The program emphasizes cinema's artistic heritage and theoretical foundations, offering interdisciplinary courses spanning comparative literature, English, Romance languages, and Germanic/Slavic studies. Students can also take classes covering performance techniques, film direction, and screenwriting.
Alumni are equipped to continue Film Studies at the graduate level, transition into digital media careers, contribute to cultural discourse through media analysis, or integrate cinematic knowledge with other professional fields like education in their vocational paths.
