In today's interconnected world where languages, literatures, and cultures converge, expanding our horizons beyond English-speaking countries has become increasingly vital. Comparative Literature examines shared characteristics across literary works and cultural traditions from diverse societies.
UGA's program is ideal for students passionate about literary analysis, particularly those fascinated by foreign languages and cultures with interests in global affairs, international diplomacy, or language studies. The program emphasizes literary forms, historical periods, thematic elements, and fundamental aspects of literature including structure, rhetoric, and language. Students can explore European, American, Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), and African (East and West) literatures, with language instruction available in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Vietnamese, and Yoruba.
Combining Comparative Literature with Intercultural Studies makes an excellent dual major, allowing students to apply credits from related fields (English, History, Women's Studies, etc.) toward degree requirements. Refer to Options II and III in the UGA Bulletin for specific information.
This major develops crucial abilities like analytical reasoning, written expression, and verbal communication to support professional aspirations. Graduates pursue careers in legal professions, writing, humanities, education, diplomacy, global commerce, or advanced academic studies.
