The Asian Languages and Literature major opens doors to cultural heritage embraced by 20% of humanity. Select from three specialization tracks: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. Upon graduation, you'll achieve fluency in speaking and reading one of these languages while gaining deep insights into East Asian literature, film, and cultural studies.
Chinese Track: Learning Chinese connects you with one of history's most enduring literary legacies. Overseas study in Asia is highly recommended. The curriculum spans beginner to advanced language instruction, classical Chinese texts, and explorations of Chinese and broader Asian cultural works.
Japanese Track: Home of samurai warriors and sumo champions, ancient shrines and tea rituals, Kabuki theater and puppet drama, Hokusai prints and pop culture icons, Kurosawa films and Murakami novels, manga comics and anime artistry - Japan stands among Earth's most captivating civilizations. Our program features Japanese language courses from introductory to advanced levels, plus studies in Japanese literary and cultural traditions. Numerous study-abroad programs in Japan are also available.
