Brown University's Literary Arts undergraduate program helps aspiring writers refine their abilities across multiple writing styles while gaining deeper insight into writing techniques. The curriculum balances creative expression with analytical study, requiring ten total courses: four creative writing workshops covering at least two genres, plus six literature-focused classes that must include literary theory/history and span different historical periods. The Literary Arts Department provides instruction in fiction, poetry, screenwriting, digital literature, and translation, along with literature seminars. Students can specialize in one genre or explore multiple forms, with opportunities to integrate other artistic disciplines like music, visual arts, or performance. Faculty recommend experimenting with different writing styles and exploring complementary art forms alongside writing courses.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
