The Institute for African American Studies, part of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, serves as a hub for exploring African Americans' cultural influence. Students select a focus area while also taking engaging courses from the other two concentrations: History and Culture, Behavioral and Social Inquiry, and Languages, Literature, and the Arts. This structure fosters understanding of history, culture, psychology, socioeconomic factors, diversity, human experiences, and artistic expression.
Committed to innovative research on African American accomplishments, the Institute offers dynamic education for diverse thinkers while functioning as Georgia's cultural archive. Distinguished faculty have authored numerous publications and received multiple honors for their scholarship and teaching. Since 1992, the Institute has broadened its academic reach across 10+ departments and increased core courses fourfold, ensuring a comprehensive, interdisciplinary learning experience.
