The Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering focuses on studying, designing, developing, and implementing computer systems and information processing methods. CISE Department's goal is to teach computing fundamentals to both degree-seeking students and the wider university community, generate and share computing knowledge and innovations, and apply computing expertise to address societal challenges.
Graduate students pursuing a Master's degree can select either the thesis or non-thesis track. Both paths require completion of 30 credit hours. Students may transfer up to 9 credits from other accredited institutions, which must be applied during their initial enrollment term. The thesis option mandates 6 credits of CIS 6971, included within the 30-credit total. Students must declare their chosen track when forming their advisory committee, with any later changes requiring committee approval. The Graduate School stipulates that track changes must be finalized at least one full semester before the planned graduation date. (Important: Students cannot switch tracks after attempting their master's examination or thesis defense.)

Engineering College applicants can qualify for the Master of Engineering degree if they hold an ABET-accredited engineering bachelor's degree or have completed equivalent core engineering coursework. Those not meeting these criteria will be considered for the Master of Science degree instead.
